The British Horological Institute’s Wessex Branch was inaugurated in December 1979 to enable local enthusiasts, collectors, clockmakers and watchmakers to meet and share their knowledge, and has an extensive branch library.
Geographically, the Branch covers a wide area, however, Lyndhurst is close to an extensive road network that enables members and guests to travel from adjoining counties. Visitors interested in horological subjects are always welcome!
Apart from the holiday months of January, July and August, meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month at the Lyndhurst Community Centre* when guest speakers give talks on various horological subjects, or members demonstrate skills. (Please check the Meetings and Events page for full details).
In addition to its normal meetings, the branch holds a yearly Auction that enables members and visitors from related trades an opportunity to buy or sell horological and workshop items displayed in the Centre’s delightful hall.

The British Horological Institute, (BHI), founded in 1858, is dedicated to the training of horologists in clock and watch repair and creation, and in supporting the horological industry. Membership is encouraged – it provides access to extensive facilities and a monthly journal covering related subjects. The training facility at Upton, near Newark, offers clock and watchmaking courses for those beginning, through to advanced courses for experienced workers wishing to enhance their knowledge and skill. Successful completion of their Distance Learning Course leads to professional accreditation that is recognised worldwide. Full information about the Institute is available on the national website bhi.co.uk.
